Learning Objectives: In this workshop, you will learn how to:
Identify the issues inherent in some ERP treatment practices for sexual orientation and gender-themed OCD
Describe justice-based ERP treatment practices for the treatment of sexual orientation and gender-themed OCD
Discuss examples of exposure hierarchies, imaginal exposure scripts, core fears, etc., that will leave clinicians well-equipped to use justice-based ERP with their clients with sexual orientation and gender-themed OCD.
Workshop Description:
Up to 40% of individuals with OCD will experience obsessions about their own sexual orientation or gender identity. Historically, clinicians have been trained to believe that the content of OCD obsessions is irrelevant and that all OCD themes can be treated the same. This blanket approach to ERP risks applying treatment in a way that could further marginalize LGBTQIA+ individuals by reinforcing harmful stereotypes and identity-related stigma. A justice-based approach to ERP ensures that all impacted persons – client, provider, and society – are considered and respected in treatment. This workshop will describe sexual orientation and gender-themed OCD and compare and contrast justice-based ERP with other historical (mis)uses of ERP for these themes. The workshop will provide examples of exposure hierarchies, imaginal exposure scripts, core fears, etc., that will leave clinicians well-equipped to use justice-based ERP with their clients with sexual orientation and gender-themed OCD.
Presented by:Caitlin M. Pinciotti, Ph.D.Dr. Caitlin Pinciotti is a Licensed Psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology with a Trauma Psychology focus at Northern Illinois University. Dr. Pinciotti’s research focuses on the assessment, conceptualization, and treatment of OCD, trauma, and PTSD and has a secondary interest in identifying and addressing mental health inequities in the LGBTQIA+ community. Dr. Pinciotti first published about justice-based ERP in 2022 and has since given 15 conference presentations and trainings on the topic. In recognition of her leadership in this domain, she was recently selected for the 2024 Bicentennial Lectureship Award from the Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital, a yearly award recognizing an outstanding early career individual who has demonstrated an impact through innovation, advocacy, and patient-centered mental health care. In total, she has given over 40 conference presentations and published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
