  • Instruction Level: Intermediate

  • Target Audience: Psychologists, Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, Psychotherapists, Other Mental Health Professionals
Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Discuss the importance of treating trauma-related Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) to enhance Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy outcomes.
  • Differentiate similarly presenting and functioning symptoms of OCD and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Explain the similarities and differences between exposure therapy treatment approaches for OCD and PTSD.
  • Apply what is learned about exposure therapy for co-occurring OCD and PTSD to their own caseloads.
Workshop Description:

Have you ever been utilizing ERP with a client, but it’s just not working? This may be due to untreated trauma that must be addressed for clients to respond to ERP.

This workshop will describe how to implement exposure therapy with individuals with co-occurring PTSD and OCD. The workshop will begin with describing the ways in which trauma and PTSD can impact OCD (e.g., trauma-related OCD), followed by a thorough review of differential diagnostic and functional assessment of similarly presenting and functioning symptoms of OCD and PTSD. Next, a review of ERP for OCD and Prolonged Exposure (PE) for PTSD, including similarities and differences in the treatment approaches. Last, the workshop will describe how to integrate exposure therapy approaches when working with individuals with co-occurring OCD and PTSD, including common misconceptions and pitfalls.
